- 92-5/8 in precut studs
144 in ÷ 16 in = 9 → 9 spaces + 1 = 10 studs on layout
+ 2 × 0 openings + 2 × 2 corners = 14 × 1.1 = 16 studs
Plates: 3 rows × 12 ft = 36 ft → 3 × 1 board = 3 boards
- Extras use a rule of thumb: 2 per door or window (king and jack studs; cripples usually come from offcuts) and 2 per corner or intersection. California corners and ladder blocking use fewer.
- Headers, sill framing, fire blocking and any required bracing or hold-downs are extra — size them from your local code (IRC R602 for wood walls).

Studs on layout are one per spacing plus one to finish the wall. Corners, wall intersections and openings add extra studs, and every wall needs a bottom plate and a (usually doubled) top plate. New to this? Words explained.
How the stud count works
Divide the wall length by the stud spacing and round up to get the number of spaces; add one stud to close the last space. Then add studs for the framing details that aren’t on layout.
layout studs = wall length ÷ spacing, rounded up, + 1 extras ≈ 2 per opening + 2 per corner or intersection studs to buy = (layout + extras) × (1 + waste) plates = rows × wall length (3 rows with a double top plate)
Example: a 12 ft wall at 16 in on center is 144 ÷ 16 = 9 spaces, so 10 studs on layout. Both ends are corners (+4), no openings: 14 studs, or about 16 with 10% extra for crooked ones. Three rows of plate are 36 ft — three 12 ft or 16 ft boards. The full worked example, including what changes in metric, is How many studs for a 12 ft wall; a longer wall with openings is How many studs for a 24 ft wall with a door and a window.
Precut stud lengths
| Precut stud | Wall height with 3 plates (1½ in each) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 92-5/8 in | 97-1/8 in | 8 ft ceilings — room for ceiling drywall and a small margin |
| 104-5/8 in | 109-1/8 in | 9 ft ceilings |
| 116-5/8 in | 121-1/8 in | 10 ft ceilings |
Layout tips
- Lay out both plates together. Tack the top and bottom plates side by side and mark them at once so the studs line up.
- Hold the layout to the sheathing. Mark the first stud so a 4 ft sheet edge lands on the center of a stud — at 16 in O.C., the first layout mark is 15¼ in from the end, then every 16 in.
- Crown the studs. Sight each one and turn the bows the same way so the wall stays flat for drywall.
- Buy a few spares. Every bundle has a few twisted or split studs; they make good blocking.

Frequently asked questions
How many studs do I need for a 12 ft wall?
At 16 in on center, 10 on layout and about 16 to buy with two corners and 10% spares — see How many studs for a 12 ft wall.
How do you calculate studs at 16 in on center?
Convert the wall length to inches, divide by 16, round up, and add 1. Then add about 2 for each corner and each door or window, plus a few spares.
What length studs for an 8 ft wall?
92-5/8 in precut studs. With a single bottom plate and a double top plate (4½ in total), the wall is 97-1/8 in tall — room for ceiling drywall on an 8 ft ceiling.
How many studs per linear foot of wall?
As a rough estimate, about one stud per foot of wall at 16 in on center once corners, openings and spares are included. The calculator gives a proper count.
