How many studs for a 24 ft wall with a door and a window?

Short answer

A 24 ft wall framed at 16 inches on center has 19 studs on layout. With a door, a window, two corners and 10% spares, buy about 30 studs and 6 boards of 16 ft plate stock.

How to work it out

  1. 288 in ÷ 16 in = 18 → 18 spaces + 1 = 19 studs on layout
  2. + 2 × 2 openings + 2 × 2 corners = 27 × 1.1 = 30 studs
  3. Plates: 3 rows × 24 ft = 72 ft → 3 × 2 boards = 6 boards

This is a typical garage or shed long wall. The door and window each add king and jack studs on both sides, but they also remove layout studs from the opening, so the net rule of thumb is about two extra studs per opening — the cripples above and below usually come out of the offcuts.

At 24 ft the plates need splices: with 16 ft stock, each row is one full board plus an 8 ft piece. Keep the top-plate splices at least a few feet away from the bottom-plate splices and land them over studs.

  • Extras use a rule of thumb: 2 per door or window (king and jack studs; cripples usually come from offcuts) and 2 per corner or intersection. California corners and ladder blocking use fewer.
  • Headers, sill framing, fire blocking and any required bracing or hold-downs are extra — size them from your local code (IRC R602 for wood walls).
  • Stagger top-plate splices from bottom-plate splices, and lap the double top plate over wall intersections.

What to know about a 24 ft wall with a door and a window

Here 288 in ÷ 16 gives 18 spaces, so 19 studs on layout. A king stud runs full height beside each side of an opening; a jack (or trimmer) stud is cut short to carry the header. Cripples are the short studs above the header and under a window sill, and they come from offcuts, which is why they are not in the count.

Header size depends on the opening width and what bears on the wall. IRC section R602 includes header tables for bearing walls, and a wide garage door needs a much deeper header than a 3 ft window. Decide the rough openings before you lay out, and mark king, jack and cripple positions on the plates along with the regular studs.

Three rows of 24 ft is 72 ft of plate. With 16 ft stock each row is a full board plus 8 ft; buying 12 ft boards also gives six boards, with the splice in the middle of the wall. Either way, the door opening is a natural place for a bottom-plate joint, since that piece of plate is cut out after the wall is standing.

How many studs for a 12 ft wall is the simpler case with no openings. The roof over a 24 ft wide garage is on Rafter length for a 24 ft span at 6/12 pitch.
