- Full-sheet layout count (no offcut reuse)
- 6 sheets · 4 × 8 ft
- Area to cover
- 144 sq ft
12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft
144 sq ft × 1.1 waste ÷ 32 sq ft per sheet = 4.95 → 5 sheets
- Subfloor and roof sheathing run with the long edge across the joists or rafters, and end joints must land on framing — on small or odd-shaped areas that can push waste above 10%.
- If offcuts can’t start the next row (short runs, furniture, grain matching), a full-sheet layout needs 6 sheets — somewhere between that and 5 sheets is realistic.

| 10 ft | 120 sq ft | 5 sheets |
| 12 ft | 144 sq ft | 5 sheets |

Building a bookshelf or cabinet from sheets? Add up the parts’ area as a rough guide and add 25–35% waste, or use the cut list calculator for solid boards. New to this? Words explained.
How the sheet count works
The calculator divides the area you need to cover by the area of one sheet, after adding a waste allowance, and rounds up. A standard 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft; a 1220 × 2440 mm sheet covers about 2.98 m². For a board finish over the sheathing, the shiplap calculator counts rows and boards.
sheets = (length × width − openings) × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area 4 × 8 ft sheet = 32 sq ft · 1220 × 2440 mm = 2.98 m²
Example: a 12 × 12 ft floor is 144 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 158.4 sq ft ÷ 32 = 4.95, so 5 sheets — laid out row by row in How many sheets of plywood for a 12x12 floor. Walls work the same way, less the openings: How many sheets to sheathe a 24 ft wall, 8 ft high. In metric, 2440 × 1220 and 2400 × 1200 mm sheets give slightly different counts, compared in How many sheets for a 4 × 3 m floor.
When area math is not enough
Area counts work well for floors, walls and roofs, where offcuts from one row start the next. They underestimate for furniture and cabinets, where every part has to come out of a sheet in one piece. For those:
- Draw each sheet as a rectangle and lay out the parts on it, grain direction included.
- Leave about ⅛ in (3 mm) between parts for the saw kerf, and trim the factory edges — they are often dinged.
- Expect 20–35% waste on cabinet work unless your part sizes happen to nest well.
Thickness guide (typical)
| Use | Common thickness |
|---|---|
| Subfloor (joists 16 in on center, middle to middle) | 23/32 in (sold as ¾) tongue-and-groove |
| Wall sheathing | 7/16 in OSB or 15/32 in plywood |
| Roof sheathing (rafters 24 in on center, middle to middle) | 7/16–5/8 in, per span rating |
| Cabinet boxes | ¾ in (18 mm) hardwood plywood |
| Drawer bottoms, cabinet backs | ¼ in (6 mm) |
Sheet goods are often the backing for trim, too: a panelled or board and batten accent wall starts with the batten layout in Board and batten spacing for a 12 ft wall, and this calculator covers any sheet backing behind the battens.
